ABOUT THE COMPANY – SANBI
Established in 2004, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) serves as a vital pillar for the country’s biodiversity conservation efforts. Its primary focus lies in researching and sharing knowledge about South Africa’s diverse ecosystems, informing crucial decisions aimed at protecting these natural treasures.
SANBI actively manages biodiversity resources, working alongside communities and authorities to combat threats like poaching and habitat loss. SANBI BURSARY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
A number of bursaries is made available for Honours, Masters and Doctoral studies, for projects relevant to SANBI’s mandate and identified as a priority for the SANBI Research Strategy.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship you need to meet the listed criteria:
- Be a passionate South African citizen: Dedicated to contributing to your country’s biodiversity knowledge and conservation.
- Embrace lifelong learning: Committed to pursuing your first Honours, Masters, or Doctoral degree full-time in 2024.
- Forge new frontiers: Eager to tackle research projects aligned with SANBI’s mission and research strategy, shaping a brighter future for our biodiversity.
- Connect across institutions: Open to studying at any South African university, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
- Build upon your expertise: If applying for Masters studies, having already completed an Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma demonstrates your dedication to the field.
- Plan for success: Secured confirmed placement in a postgraduate program and provisional acceptance from your academic supervisors, ensuring a smooth start to your research journey.
- Focus on your research: Currently unemployed, allowing you to fully dedicate your time and energy to conducting impactful research.

MORE ABOUT SANBI BURSARY PROGRAMME – VALUE AND BENEFITS
Successful applicants will have their expenses taken care of by SANBI while they focus on their studies. Below is the breakdown of the 2024 award:
- Honours studies: R120 000 for 1 year only
- Masters studies: R150 000 per year for 2 years
- Doctoral studies: R180 000 per year for 3 years

Interested applicants must download and fill in the SANBI Bursary Cover Sheet 2024 (.docx)
Your application must be accompanied by the following set of documents:
- Completed cover sheet (from the link above)
- Certified copy of your ID document
- Certified copy of your Drivers licence
- Certified copy of your Academic records
- Certified copy of your Highest qualification
- Bursary cover letter (including why you should be awarded the bursary)
- Project outline (1 page for Honours, 2 pages for Masters and Doctoral)
- Full CV
- 2 letters of reference (one must be from an academic supervisor)
- Letter from a prospective university supervisor as well as a SANBI supervisor, indicating willingness to supervise
- Provisional registration/ application from the university
