Undergraduate fields

For students entering their first year of undergraduate study in 2027, the listed fields are:

  • BSc or BEng in Civil Engineering.
  • Public Procurement or Supply Chain Management.
  • Computer Science or Information Systems.

Postgraduate fields

For postgraduate applicants enrolling for an NQF Level 8 qualification, the approved study areas include:

  • Property Development and Management, including real estate and commercial properties.
  • Commercial Property and Investment.
  • Property Asset Management.
  • Property Valuation.
  • Town and Regional Planning, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

WHAT ARE THE SANRAL BURSARY REQUIREMENTS?

The SANRAL External Bursary Programme has separate academic requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate applicants.

Undergraduate applicants

  • Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Applicants must be entering their first year of undergraduate study in 2027.
  • Applicants must intend to study one of the approved undergraduate fields.
  • Applicants must have achieved a minimum overall academic average of 70% in their latest academic results.
  • The course indicated on the application must match the course for which the applicant has applied at their chosen tertiary institution.

Postgraduate applicants

  • Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Applicants must be enrolling for a postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8 in 2027.

SANRAL offers full and partial bursary awards. The funding package depends on the award made to the successful applicant.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SANRAL BURSARY?

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE SANRAL BURSARY?

Applicants are required to upload supporting documents for the SANRAL bursary application. The published document requirements include:

  • Letter of motivation: A one-page letter explaining the applicant’s background and reasons for applying for the bursary.
  • Academic results: Applicants still at school must provide their Term 1 and Term 2 results. Applicants already studying at a tertiary institution must provide their full academic record from that institution.
  • Proof of tertiary application: Evidence that the applicant has applied to study at a tertiary institution.
  • South African ID or birth certificate: A certified copy of the applicant’s identity document or birth certificate.
  • Parents’ or legal guardian’s identity documents: Copies of the relevant identity documents.
  • Proof of residence: A water and electricity bill from the local council in the name of the applicant’s parent or legal guardian.

  • Proof of income, which must not be older than three months at the time of submission.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) is a government-owned company responsible for the management, maintenance and development of South Africa’s national road network.

SANRAL’s External Bursary Programme provides financial assistance to eligible South African students pursuing selected undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. The programme supports the development of skills in areas relevant to the agency’s work, including civil engineering, supply chain management, information systems, property management, planning, finance and law.

The External Bursary Programme is separate from SANRAL’s school Scholarship Programme, which supports eligible learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12.
