ABOUT THE MINDS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME ā FIELDS OF STUDY
The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) is seeking talented African students to join its prestigious Scholarship Programme for Leadership Development. This program offers funding for Postgraduate studies (Honours or Master’s level) within Africa, across any field, at approved institutions.
Open to students from all African countries, the MINDS Scholarship provides a unique opportunity to pursue your academic aspirations while fostering your leadership potential. By studying outside your home country, you will immerse yourself in the diverse experiences and perspectives that shape Africa, developing a continent-wide development mindset and the skills to bridge divides and drive collaboration.

MINDS SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for the MINDS Scholarship Programme, you must meet the following criteria:
Nationality and Residence:
- Be a national of an African country.
- Currently reside in an African country.
Academic Qualifications:
- Hold an offer of admission for a full-time postgraduate degree (Honours or Master’s) at an approved institution outside your country of citizenship and/or residency.
- Approved institutions vary by region:
- Southern Africa: University of Cape Town, University of Witwatersrand, African Leadership University (Mauritius), University of Mauritius.
- East Africa: African Leadership University (Rwanda), Carnegie Mellon University (Rwanda), Makerere University, Strathmore University.
- North Africa: Al Akhawayn University, UniversitƩ Cadi Ayyad, UniversitƩ Mohammed V.
- West Africa: Pan-Atlantic University (Lagos Business School), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, University of Development Studies.
- Achieved a minimum academic result of 70% for each subject or course within the last two years of completed studies.
Leadership Potential:
- Demonstrate strong leadership abilities or potential, as evidenced through your responses to specific application questions and requirements.
HOW TO APPLY FOR MINDS SCHOLARSHIP
Applications must be done online via MINDS Scholarship Application, Your application must be accompanied by a set of documents to help with assessment. Here are the documents:
- Passport Bio Page/Data Page: Copy of your passport’s biographical information page.
- Academic Transcript/Results: Certified copy of your academic transcript for the last two years of study.
- University Acceptance Letter: Official copy of your university acceptance letter addressed to you, specifying the degree you’ve been accepted to, academic year of commencement, and duration of the course.
- Curriculum Vitae/Resume: Detailed CV or Resume, limited to a maximum of four single-sided pages.
- Study Permit/Visa: Copy of your valid study permit or visa, or proof of application if still pending.
- Letters of Reference: Two letters of reference, each no longer than three pages, addressing:
- Demonstration of your integrity, competency, and/or potential as a leader.
- Commitment to the development of the African continent.
