The Citrus Academy Bursary Fund provides financial support to students whose studies are relevant to citrus production, research and the wider citrus industry. The fund was established in its current form in 2006 and forms part of the Citrus Academy’s broader skills-development work in the citrus sector.
WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE BURSARY COVER?
The Citrus Academy Bursary supports studies related to citrus production or research. The programme therefore covers agricultural and other fields that are relevant to the citrus industry.
Examples of fields previously identified by the Citrus Academy include:

- Entomology
- Horticulture
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Microbiology

The Academy also considers other agricultural-related fields where they have a clear connection to citrus production or research.

WHAT DOES THE CITRUS ACADEMY BURSARY COVER?
The Citrus Academy Bursary is a partial bursary rather than a fully funded award. Funding can be used towards study-related costs such as tuition, accommodation, meals, books and stationery.
For postgraduate students, funding can also contribute towards research costs. The amount awarded depends on the bursary support approved for the student.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BURSARY?
The Citrus Academy Bursary is available to students who are already studying at tertiary level and are interested in pursuing a career in the citrus industry.
Applicants must generally:
- Be a citizen of South Africa, Swaziland or Zimbabwe.
- Study full-time or part-time at a registered tertiary institution in South Africa.
- Study in a field related to citrus production or research.
- Be entering their second year of study or above.
- Be interested in pursuing a career in the citrus industry.
- Comply with the terms and conditions of the Citrus Academy Bursary Fund agreement.
Recognised universities, colleges and universities of technology are included in the eligible institution categories.
Applications are assessed using factors such as academic performance, the relevance of the field of study, financial need, previous disadvantage, background or connection to the citrus industry, gender and disability.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY?
Applications are submitted online through the Citrus Communities Student Community.
The Citrus Academy has moved its Bursary Fund application route to the Citrus Communities platform. Applicants must join the Student Community to access the current Bursary Fund application.
Applications are accepted online only. Email, faxed or posted applications are not accepted.
WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE BURSARY?
The current Citrus Communities application information requires applicants to submit a copy of their identity document and their latest academic results with the online application.
The application may also require additional information depending on the applicant and type of support being requested. Postgraduate applicants should provide sufficient information about their research project and supervisor because postgraduate applications are assessed partly according to the importance and priority of the proposed research.
Applicants should therefore follow the document requirements shown on the current online application carefully before submitting.
WHEN IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE BURSARY?
Citrus Academy generally accepts applications for the following academic year from 1 June to 15 September.
The closing date is 15 September 2026 for the 2027 academic year.
The Academy assesses applications after the closing date and aims to notify successful applicants before the middle of December, although applicants should rely on the current application information for the latest notification arrangements.

WHAT OBLIGATION DOES THE CITRUS ACADEMY BURSARY HAVE AFTER GRADUATION?
Successful Bursary Fund recipients are required to sign a Bursary Agreement and comply with the academic and conduct requirements of the programme.
Students are also required to work in the citrus industry after completing their studies for at least the same period for which they received bursary support. This means that students who receive one year of bursary support are generally required to complete at least one year of work in the citrus industry after graduation.
