WHAT ARE THE AMAZON BURSARY REQUIREMENTS?

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered:

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be enrolled at a recognised university in South Africa.
  • Be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering, or a specialisation in Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence.
  • Be entering the final year of a three-year degree or the fourth year of a four-year degree in 2027.
  • Have achieved an overall academic average of at least 65%.
  • Plan to progress to an Honours degree in 2028 and complete tertiary studies at Honours level or NQF Level 8 by the end of 2028.
  • Demonstrate coding ability in a programming language of your choice, such as Java, C, C#, C++ or Python.
  • Show a genuine interest in software development engineering and a career at Amazon.
  • Be available to complete a paid Amazon internship during the summer vacation.
  • Be available to commence full-time permanent employment with Amazon in January 2029 if offered a position after the internship assessment.

Master’s-level students are not eligible for this bursary.

WHAT DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY COVER?

The Amazon bursary provides funding for approved study-related expenses, subject to the programme’s funding limits. The covered costs include:

  • Tuition fees.
  • Residence or private accommodation.
  • Subsistence expenses.
  • Stationery and books.
  • A personal computer.
  • Transport.

The funding amounts are capped.

ABOUT AMAZON

Amazon is a global technology and e-commerce company with operations across areas including online retail, cloud computing and digital services. The Amazon Recruitment Bursary was launched by Amazon Development Centre in 2018 to support students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing studies in computing-related fields.

The programme connects bursary funding with a paid Software Development Engineer internship. During the internship, participants demonstrate their technical and problem-solving skills and may be assessed for a full-time permanent Software Development Engineer position after completing their studies.

To qualify for 100% of the bursary funding, recipients must be open to accepting a full-time permanent position with Amazon for a period equal to the number of years they received bursary funding, provided they receive an employment offer following the internship assessment.
