The bursary is available to students entering their second or third year of undergraduate study, or Honours-level study, in the 2027 academic year.

WHAT ARE THE JSE EMPOWERMENT FUND BURSARY REQUIREMENTS?
To qualify for the bursary, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen within the designated group.
- Be a top-performing student studying full-time towards a degree in one of the approved fields.
- Be entering second year, third year or Honours-level study.
- Have achieved a minimum aggregate of 70%.
- Have a combined annual income of no more than R650,000 for the applicant’s parents or caregivers.
- Be studying at one of the universities approved for the bursary.
The approved universities are the University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand, Nelson Mandela University, University of Cape Town, University of Limpopo, North-West University, University of Fort Hare, University of KwaZulu-Natal and University of the Free State.

The JSE Empowerment Fund Bursary provides financial support for the following study-related costs:

The JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF) was established by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange to support academically deserving black South African students with financial assistance for appropriate qualifications and to help develop future professionals for the financial services industry.
The JEF Trust is funded through dividends from its JSE shareholding. The programme forms part of the JSE’s education and skills-development initiatives and supports students in selected academic fields relevant to the financial services sector.
