IMESA Bursary Programme 2026

The Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) Bursary scheme is excited the opening of application for fiancial assistance for 2026 academic year. The IMESA Bursary programme is designed to support full-time studies in the field of Civil Engineering. Aspiring South African students who need financial support to complete their studies can now submit applications for funding opportunities.

About IMESA

The IMESA which stands for the Institute of Municipal Engineering of South Africa is a professional body that represents municipal engineers. The institute’s mendate is extended to other engineering professionals in South Africa.

The role of IMESA is to promote the advancement of municipal engineering to improve the rolout of infrastructure.

Who Can Apply?

The IMESA Bursary is offered to learners who are pursuing Civil Engineering and related qualifications in infrastructure engineering.

It accommodates learners who are children of IMESA members, as well as to students who are not children of IMESA members but who meet the other requirements can apply.

  • You must be studying full-time for a Civil Engineering degree
  • You must be pursuing a qualification in any field of study under infrastructure engineering
  • You must be studying or enrolled to study at an ECSA accredited tertiary educational institution in South Africa.
  • Learners must have successfully completed their first year of studies.

Bursary Option A: For Children or Dependents of IMESA Members

To be considered for this bursary, applicants must:

  • Be the child or legal dependent of a current IMESA member who has maintained their membership for a minimum of five years.
  • Be pursuing full-time undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering or a related discipline within infrastructure development.
  • Have completed at least one year of study at the time of application.
  • Be entering their second or later year of study in 2026.
  • Be attending an ECSA-accredited tertiary institution within South Africa.

Bursary Option B: For Students Who Are Not IMESA Members

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a Civil Engineering qualification or a closely related field within the infrastructure sector.
  • Have successfully completed their first academic year.
  • Be progressing into their second year of study or beyond in 2026.
  • Be registered at a South African tertiary institution that is accredited by ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).
  • Demonstrate a genuine financial need — applicants must not have the means to fund their studies independently.

Bursary Value & Benefits

Successful applicants for the bursary will have the following expenses coverage:

  • Tuition Fees
  • Books
  • Maximum value of R50,000

Note all bursary recipeints are appointed a mentor and encouraged to be involved in IMESA activities.

The following supporting documents must accompany your application:

  • Your ID document (certified copy)
  • Your 2025 mid year exam results (certified copy)
  • An undersigned statement from the tertiary institute, declaring your academic progress in your first year
  • An affidavit declaring your parents/ guardians monthly income, and your financial situation
