The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture is tasked by the South African government to transform sports, arts & culture by ensuring equitable access, development & excellence at all levels. It harness their socio-economic contributions for a better life for all South Africans.
ABOUT DSAC BURSARY – FIELDS OF STUDY
- Anthropology (exclusively with a focus on forensic / medical anthropology)
- Archaeology (exclusively with a focus on marine and underwater cultural heritage, and forensic)
- Archives and Records management
- Conservation of the built environment including preventive conservation
- Collections (cultural & natural) management (Not Nature Conservation)
- Palaeontology
- Museum Studies or Management and Curatorship
- IKS or Courses that contribute to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and S.A. Living Heritage
- Marketing of heritage
- Digital heritage
DSAC BURSARY VALUE & BENEFITS
- The maximum value of the DSAC bursary for 2024 academic year is R110 000 per student
- Study fees: The bursary caters for the total amount of study fees
- Books: Prescribed books will all be paid for by the DSAC.
- Laptops not costing more than R10 000. This will be paid according to receipt/invoices of three quotations.
- Accommodation: R 50 000 maximum amount (NB where applicable)
- Meals: R 18 500 maximum amount (NB where applicable)
- NB: Funds are payable directly to the higher institution of learning
- Interested institutions are requested to collate applications from their various faculties or departments and submit on behalf of the students by no later than 28 February 2023. Applications should only be sent to: [email protected] Applications not sent to email address provided will not be considered. There should be one focal point in each institution for the collation and submission of all applications received. Students are requested to complete the attached application form and send it together with the latest academic results or academic record; certified copy of ID; and university provisional acceptance letter or admission letter.
DSAC BURSARY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Eligibility criteria for the Heritage Bursary Program:
- Citizenship: South African citizen
- University acceptance: Have a provisional acceptance or admission letter from an institution
- Age: Not older than 40 years old
- Academic performance:
- Existing student: Must demonstrate outstanding or satisfactory academic progress through a progress report.
- New student: Must have a Grade 12 certificate with good results.
- Field of study: Must be enrolled in a heritage-related field of study.
- Employment: Not currently employed full-time by government, state agencies, or the private sector with a salary exceeding R130,000 per year.
- No other financial support: Not receiving any other bursaries or financial assistance for the 2024 academic year.

- Most recent academic record, if currently studying (certified copy)
- Proof of provisional acceptance/ admission at university
- Postgraduate students: progress report from supervisor, if writing a dissertation or thesis (on university letterhead)
