Abe Bailey Travel Bursary Details
The Travel Bursaries are awarded every year and cover the cost of an all-expenses-paid 3 week educational tour of England and Scotland. Included in the cost are economy class return air fares between Cape Town and London as well as travel between inland university centres and Cape Town. It covers the cost of carrying out the Tour and all excursions according to the approved programme. In addition, funds will be made available, at the discretion of the Trustees, to cover out of pocket expenses in the United Kingdom.
The host in the United Kingdom is Goodenough College in London. The selected Travel Bursars will be expected to remain in the company of the other Bursars, to participate in all organised activities and to carry out the whole of the approved programme. There will be limited short periods during the programme when Bursars will be free to arrange their own activities.
The selected Travel Bursars from South African universities will gather in Cape Town on 22nd November, spend three days on orientation, and depart by air to London. All bursars are required to be in Cape Town at the orientation venue by the start of the orientation session. It will not be possible to join the tour after that point nor to be absent from the orientation activities in Cape Town for a graduation ceremony, exams, interviews or any other personal reason.
The tour will officially end in London on the Saturday before Christmas, with returning flights arriving in South Africa the next day.
ABE BAILEY FELLOWSHIP
All Bursars become a member of the Abe Bailey Fellowship comprising past Travel Bursars since the Tour’s inception in 1951, now numbering over 900. They are kept in touch by way of the Fellowship Newsletter and an annual updated address list.
