KWAZULU-NATAL GOVERNMENT BURSARY 2025

The KwaZulu-Natal government is a provincial government is one of 9 provincial governments that were formed in 1994. It is led by various political parties that are voted for by the people who reside in the province. The KZN Government Bursary is offered with the intention of supporting applicants from the province with funds to complete their studies.

This provincial government oversees the following departments: Health, Transport, education, Traditional affairs, Economic Development, Agriculture and Rural Development, Arts and Culture, Human Settlement, Treasury, Environmental Affairs, Public Works, Sports and Recreation and Social Development.

The KZN Province is popularly known as the home to the powerful Zulu Kingdom, King Shaka Zulu. in the early 19th century. During British colonial rule, the province was named as Natal Colony of which its merger with Bantustan of KwaZulu in 1994, formed what is today called the province of KwaZulu-Natal.


FIELDS OF STUDY COVERED BY THE KZN GOVERNMENT BURSARY

There are three departments that are offering bursaries that are group as a single KZN Government bursaries and these are:

KZN Department of Transport:

  • BSc in Civil Engineering
  • Degree in Transport and Logistics
  • Degree in Transport Economics
  • BSC in Marine Engineering
  • Degree in Maritime Studies

KZN Department of Human Settlements:

  • Construction Studies / Management

KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development:

  • BSc in Agricultural Engineering
  • National Diploma in Industrial Engineering
  • National Diploma in Veterinary Technologist
  • BVSc in Veterinary  Science

EXPENSES COVERED BY THE KZN GOVERNMENT BURSARY

Below is the list of expenses that are covered by the bursary:

  • Tuition fees
  • Prescribed books
  • Accommodation
  • Meals or stipend

Bursary beneficiaries who successfully complete their studies in agreed period will enter into an employment contract with the respective department. The contract will be equal to the number of years they received funding from government.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Applicants must reside within the KwaZulu-Natal province
  • Applicants must be in possession of Matric
  • Applicants must be studying or intend on studying full-time, towards an approved undergraduate qualification
  • Preference will be given to students who will pursue studies within the KwaZulu-Natal province
  • Youth with disabilities are encouraged to apply

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO APPLY FOR THE KZN GOVERNMENT BURSARY

STEP 1 – Collect application forms from the following locations:

  • Operation Sukuma Sakhe War Rooms
  • Department of Education District Offices
  • Student Funding Office at Institutions of higher learning
  • KZN Local Municipalities
  • KZN Libraries

STEP 2 – Complete application forms by providing required information

STEP 3 – Attach all required documents listed below:

  • A certified copy of your South Africa ID document
  • Certified copy of your Matric certificate
  • Tertiary students must submit recent academic perfromance results/ transcripts, if currently studying
  • Proof of registration or acceptance/ provisional acceptance at a public institution (on tertiary letterhead)
  • Parents or guardians ID documents or death certificates if deceased (certified copies)
  • Parents or guardians proof of household income and expenses (latest payslips if employed, proof of unemployment from Department of Labour if unemployed, proof of pension or grant if applicable)
  • Proof of address in KwaZulu-Natal (from a ward councillor)
  • Profiling certificate, if applicable (certified copy)
