Compensation Fund Bursary

The Compensation Fund acts as an arm of the Department of Labour which is charged with the responsibility to compensate individuals injured while on duty. Additionally the fund provides support with the aim of rehabilitation of of affected persons to become fit for work.

The aim of the Compensation Fund Bursary Programme is to create a pool of skilled and semi-skilled workforce that can be of benefit to the safety of the workplace. It targets studnets who are pursuing studies occupational health, safety, and rehabilitation qualifications.

Fields of Study Covered by the Compensation Fund Bursary

Below is the list of qualifications that are covered by the Compensation Fund Bursary:

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

  • Actuarial Science
  • Accounting Science
  • Data Science
  • Aeronautical Engineering/ Aerospace Control/ Aviation
  • Economic Science
  • Environmental Health
  • Financial Mathematics
  • Mathematical Science
  • Risk Management and Forensic Science
  • Statistics

Engineering Studies

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics
  • Production and Process Engineering

Information Technology and & Digital Studies

  • Computer Science (focusing on Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cyber Security, Robotics, and Software Engineering)
  • Digital Studies (specializing in Digital Marketing, Graphic Design, Animation, Film, and Production, Brand Communication and Management)
  • Cloud Computing, Quantum Computing

Education and Health Studies

  • Clinical Science and Health
  • Teaching Studies (Majoring in Mathematics, Science, ICT, Early Childhood Development)

Creative and Technical Studies

  • Architecture
  • Culinary Arts

Vocational Training

  • TVET Qualifications for applicants in possession of Grade 9 and hold a General Education Certificate (GEC).

Please note: The Compensation Fund may consider other fields of study, depending on the availability of funds.

COID Bursary Benefits

Successful applicants will have following expenses covered: tuition fees, prescribed study materials, accommodation and a monthly stipend.

Bursary allocation is on yearly basis and is renewed upon submission of satisfactory results. This articles also provides instructions on how to apply.

Eligibility Requirements

There are different requirements for unemployed COID beneficiaries and dependents of COID beneficiaries.

COID Beneficiaries:

  • Applicants must be a South African citizens
  • Applicants must be currently unemployed
  • Applicants must be a COID beneficiaries with a permanent disablement (PWD) which resulted from of occupational injuries/ diseases
  • Applicants must be studying intend on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Applicants must have been accepted to study at a recognised Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, Community Education and Training (CET) College or Higher Education Institution (HEl)
  • Applicants must intend to improve your skills to return to the work force or become self-employed

Dependents of COID Beneficiaries:

  • Applicants must be a South African citizens
  • Applicants must be between 17 and 35 years old
  • Applicants must be a dependent of a COID beneficiary with a permanent disablement or a dependent of a fatally injured employee
  • Applicants must be studying or enrolled to study within one of the aforementioned fields of study (other qualifications may also be considered)
  • Applicants must be accepted to study at a recognised Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, Community Education and Training (CET) College or Higher Education Institution (HEl)

Application Process

All application must be submitted completing the Compensation Fund Bursary Application Form 2025 (.pdf)

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of your ID document
  • COID pension number or COID claim number
  • Latest academic transcript, if currently studying
  • Proof of acceptance from an approved institute
  • Tuition fees quotation, where applicable
  • Prescribed Learning Resources quotation, if available (on institutions letterhead)
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of disability, if applicable (verification by a Health Care Professional or Disability Support Office)

Dependents of COID Beneficiaries

  • Certified copy of your ID document
  • ID document / unabridged birth certificate showing details of the COID beneficiary (certified copy)
  • Parents/ guardians ID documents (certified copy)/ death certificates if deceased (certified copy)
  • COID pension number or COID claim number
  • Matric June results, if currently in Matric
  • Latest academic transcript, if currently studying
  • Proof of acceptance from an approved institute
  • Tuition fees quotation, where applicable
  • Prescribed Learning Resources quotation, if available (on institutions letterhead)
  • Proof of residence
  • Disability proof, if applicable (verification by a Health Care Professional or Disability Support Office)
  • Pre-entry assessment (if applying for the apprenticeship programme)
  • Proof of income (latest payslip if employed: certified copy, affidavit if unemployed or an informal worker, proof of SASSA grant if applicable, proof pension if applicable, or other proof of income)
