Thungela is South Africa’s coal mining company with its legacy dating as far back as year 1945. The company aims to build a leading thermal coal business in South Africa.
THUNGELA BURSARY 2025 – FIELDS OF STUDY
rsaries are awarded to deserving South Africa students who will join the company operations upon completion. Students who are in financial need or those requiring experiential training can apply.
Study Fields – the bursary caters for various engineering studies as listed and appearing on the list here below:
- Mining Engineering studies
- Electrical Engineering studies
- Environmental related studies
- Mechanical Engineering studies
- Geology
WH CAN APPLY?
- Only South African students can submit applications
- Be a student in the study fields set out by Thungela on the list above
- Bursaries are extended to previously disadvantaged candidates
- Applicants must be in need of financial assistance or experiential training in mining related studies
- You must be a student on your 1st or 2nd year of studies in a recognized institution of higher learning
APPLICATION PROCESS
All applications for the Thungela Bursary Programme 2025 must be complete online via Thungela Bursary Application dedicated page.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Here is the list of supporting documents you must upload when you apply:
- Certified copy of your ID document
- Certified copy of your Matric certificate
- Full academic performance record, if currently studying (certified copy)
- Parents or guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed, affidavit if unemployed, proof of pension or grant if applicable) (certified copy)

The closing date for applications is 13 September 2024 – Late applications will not be processed. Make sure that you start with your application process earlier so that you do not miss the deadline.
