Sasol Bursary Programme South Africa 2026

Fields of Study

South African undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to apply for financial support for the 2026 academic year. Sasol mainstream bursary programme is open to these fields:

BEng / BSc Undergraduate studies (University):

  • Chemical Engineering,
  • Civil Engineering,
  • Computer Engineering
  • Data Science (Computer Science / Mathematics / Operations Research / Statistics)
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Chemistry (up to Honours level)
  • Geology (up to Honours level)
  • Metallurgy (up to Honours level)

Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Undergraduate studies (at University of Technology):

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
  • Instrumentation and Control Engineering (Electrical Light Current)
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mine Surveying

MSc / MEng / PhD Postgraduate Studies:

  • Chemical Engineering (Fluid Dynamics / Mathematical and Statistical Modelling / Process Modelling / Reactor Technology / Separation Technology / Thermodynamics)
  • Chemistry (Advance analytical Chemistry in the areas of Vibrational Spectroscopy or Gas Chromatography / Catalysis or Polymer Science / Environmental Science in the areas of Water, Waste or Air, or in Air with focus on dispersion modelling)
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Science (Applied Mathematics / Statistics)

More About Sasol Bursary – Expenses Coverage

Undergraduate University Bursary

This bursary supports full-time students at recognised South African universities pursuing relevant degrees (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, etc.).

What is covered:

  • Registration fees
  • Full tuition fees
  • Prescribed textbooks
  • Pocket money (personal allowance)
  • Meal allowance
  • Accommodation allowance (on-campus or approved off-campus)
  • Once-off allowance for a computer and scientific calculator

Additional support:

  • Vacation work opportunities after completing 2nd and 3rd year (paid practical experience at Sasol sites)
  • Psychosocial support through student workshops, group discussions, and access to Sasol’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
  • Mentoring and career guidance from Sasol professionals

Undergraduate University of Technology Bursary

This stream is for students at Universities of Technology completing National Diplomas or Degrees with integrated practical training (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Process Instrumentation, etc.).

What is covered:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition and exam fees
  • Prescribed textbooks
  • Pocket money
  • Accommodation allowance
  • Meal allowance

Additional support:

  • Practical training components (P1 and P2, if required) completed at Sasol sites as part of your qualification
  • Full academic and workplace integration to meet university requirements
  • Ongoing mentoring during both academic and practical phases

Postgraduate Bursary

This bursary supports Honours, Master’s, and Doctoral students in high-priority fields aligned with Sasol’s research and innovation needs (e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Data Science, Environmental Science).

What is covered:

  • Monthly stipend (to cover living expenses)
  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Research costs (including materials, equipment, conferences)
  • Accommodation
  • Other study-related expenses

Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?

Undergraduate University Bursary

This stream funds full-time BSc or BEng degrees at accredited South African universities. UNISA students are not eligible.

Applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be currently in Matric (Grade 12) or have already completed Matric
  • Intend to register (or already be registered) for full-time undergraduate studies in one of the approved degree fields listed on the Sasol bursary website for 2026
  • Be studying (or planning to study) at a recognised and accredited public university in South Africa
  • Meet the following minimum academic results in Matric (for new applicants):
    • Mathematics: Level 6 (70–79%)
    • Physical Science: Level 6 (70–79%)
    • English (Home Language or First Additional Language): Level 5 (60–69%)
    • English (Second Additional Language): Level 4 (50–59%)
  • If already studying: Have passed all subjects registered in 2025 with a minimum average of 50%
  • Be able to complete your degree within the standard minimum duration (e.g., 4 years for most engineering degrees). Students on extended programmes or who have added extra years are not eligible

Undergraduate University of Technology

This stream provides financial support to full-time National Diploma or Degree studies at accredited Universities of Technology in South Africa.

Applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • Intend to register for full-time studies in 2026 in one of the approved diploma/degree fields
  • Be studying (or planning to study) at a recognised and accredited University of Technology in South Africa
  • Meet the following minimum Matric results (for new applicants):
    • Mathematics: Level 5 (60–69%)
    • Physical Science: Level 5 (60–69%)
    • English: Level 5 (60–69%)

Note: Students already enrolled in studies at a University of Technology are not eligible for this category in 2026.

Postgraduate Bursary

This stream funds Honours, Master’s, and Doctoral studies in priority research areas aligned with Sasol’s sustainability and innovation goals.

Applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Have completed Matric
  • Be registered (or eligible to register) for full-time postgraduate studies in 2026 in one of the approved fields
  • Be studying (or planning to study) at a recognised and accredited South African university (international institutions are not funded)
  • Have achieved a minimum average of 65% in all subjects/modules registered in 2025 (for Honours/4th-year applicants)
  • Be in your final year of study or have completed one of the following undergraduate qualifications:
    • Applied Mathematics (BSc)
    • Chemical Engineering (BEng / BSc)
    • Chemistry (BSc)
    • Computer Engineering (BEng)
    • Computer Science (BSc)
    • Electronic Engineering (BEng)
    • Statistics (BSc)
  • Be able to clearly articulate a research interest area that supports Sasol’s current sustainability focus (a full project proposal is not required at application stage — successful candidates will refine topics with Sasol mentors and university supervisors)
  • Have a consistently strong academic record
  • Have no criminal record

General Requirements for All Applicants

  • Sasol reserves the right to verify all information submitted.
  • Preference may be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and those who align closely with Sasol’s employment equity targets.
  • Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee an award — selection is competitive and based on academic merit, financial need, and Sasol’s strategic skills requirements.
  • All bursary awards are conditional on satisfactory academic performance, medical fitness (where applicable), and availability of positions for vacation work or future employment.
