South African Road Federation (SARF) Bursary 2026

The South African Road Federation (SARF) plays a pivotal role as a cornerstone of South Africa’s road transport development. The federation focuses in advancing knowledge, training, and innovation within the country’s road industry. The SARF Bursary Programme aims to address the gap caused by the rising cost of higher education which prevents many talented individuals from pursuing qualifications in transport.

SARF Bursary 2026 – Who Can Apply?

The SARF Bursary is open to students who meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be studying towards a qualification in a road transport-related field (see list below).
  • Must be registered at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
  • National Diploma students: must have passed the first semester (S1) exams.
  • Degree students: must have passed their first-year exams.

Preferred Applicants

As much as the bursary is open to other students listed above, preference will be given to applicants listed below:

  • South African citizens and residents of SADC countries.
  • Students at advanced levels of study (MTech, MSc, etc.), though undergraduates may also apply.
  • Full-time students, although part-time and distance learning students are considered.
  • Students employed by SARF member companies.

The SARF bursary provides financial support to undergraduate and postgraduate studies in these study fields below:

  • Road Safety Engineering
  • Road Transport Economics
  • Road Transport Management
  • Road Engineering, including:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Traffic Engineering
    • Bridge Engineering
    • Pavement Engineering
    • Transportation Planning
    • Construction Management
    • Construction Materials
    • Storm Water Engineering
    • Environmental Engineering

SARF Bursary Value and Benefits

The SARF bursary does not cover all expenses resulting from your enrolment. The value gets determined by the applicant’s financial need and is awarded at the discretion of the SARF Council.

All bursary recipients are expected to:

  • Present their research or academic progress to their local SARF branch.
  • Submit biannual progress reports.
  • Register as associate members of the SARF.

  • A certified copy of your ID document
  • A certified copy of your Grade 11 year end results (applicants in Grade 12)
