The Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA) is committed to driving innovation and sustainability in the pulp and paper industry of Southern Africa. The PAMSA Bursary is an an exceptional financial support opportunity for aspiring postgraduate students in chemical engineering.
Since it was established in 1992, PAMSA has succeeded in gaining more than 90% of the country’s paper, packaging, and tissue producers. This support enables PAMSA play a critical role in shaping a more sustainable future through education and industry collaboration.
Fields of Study Covered by PAMSA Bursary
The PAMSA Bursary Programme 2026 targets final-year undergraduate students in Chemical Engineering. It also provides funding for Chemical Engineering graduates who wish to apply for the research programme. Talented students who are pursuing a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at these universities can apply:
- Stellenbosch University
- University of Johannesburg
- North-West University
- University of Pretoria
The bursary is designed not only to alleviate financial barriers but also to provide students with hands-on industry exposure. Recipients will engage in applied research that addresses real-world challenges in pulp, paper, and bio-based materials, contributing meaningfully to South Africa’s bioeconomy.
What the PAMSA Bursary Covers
Below are the expenses that are paid for by the bursary:
- Full tuition fees
- Textbooks and study materials
- Possible accommodation and living allowances (at the discretion of PAMSA)
- Mentorship and possible vacation work opportunities
Additionally, bursary recipients may be considered for PAMSA’s Masters in Chemical Engineering programme. It is offered in collaboration with top South African universities and industry partners.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the 2025 PAMSA Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- You must be a South African citizen
- Applicants must be currently in the final year of a BEng/BSc in Chemical Engineering
- Studies must be undertaken at a recognised South African university
- You must intend to pursue postgraduate studies (Masters in Chemical Engineering) in 2026 academic year
- You must have achieved at least a minimum of 60% average in academic results
- Have a strong interest in bioprocessing, pulp and paper, or sustainable manufacturing

The closing date for applications is 6 June 2025 – applications will be accepted until 27 June 2025 although preference will be given to applicants who apply on the closing date.
