Student Loans Without Surety In South Africa

WHAT IS A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

A student loan without surety is a study loan that does not require another person to guarantee repayment on behalf of the student.

Traditional student loans may require a parent, guardian, sponsor or another person to act as a surety or guarantor. A loan without surety removes that requirement, although the lender can still apply its own credit, affordability, academic and institutional eligibility requirements.

Not every student loan is available without surety. Availability depends on the lender, the student’s study status, institution, course, income and other qualifying conditions.

CAN YOU GET A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Yes, but options for students who need a loan without surety are limited and the requirements depend on the provider.

Standard Bank has offered a student loan without surety for eligible students at participating institutions and approved courses. However, Standard Bank’s current website states that applications for its backed Student Loan without Surety offering are closed.

There are also circumstances where a student can obtain study finance without a separate guarantor. For example, Nedbank states that a student studying part-time can apply without a guarantor if the student has an income and can make the required monthly repayments.

This means that “student loan without surety” does not refer to one universal loan product. Students need to check the current terms of the specific lender before applying.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

There is no single set of requirements for all student loans without surety. Lenders may consider:

  • Whether you are studying full-time or part-time.
  • Your income and ability to make repayments.
  • Your household income, where applicable.
  • The institution where you are studying.
  • The qualification or course you are studying.
  • Your academic results or academic progress.
  • Your credit and affordability profile.
  • The amount of funding you require.

For example, Standard Bank’s no-surety product is restricted to full-time students at participating universities and approved courses, with a gross annual household income below R600,000.

DOES STANDARD BANK OFFER A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

Standard Bank has a Student Loan without Surety designed for eligible students who do not have someone to stand surety for them. The product can be used for expenses such as tuition, accommodation, textbooks and educational equipment.

However, applications for the Standard Bank-backed Student Loan without Surety offering are currently closed, according to Standard Bank’s current product page. Students should therefore not assume that the no-surety application is currently available simply because the product information remains online.

When the product is available, its published qualifying criteria include:

  • Being a South African citizen.
  • Studying full-time.
  • Studying at a participating university.
  • Studying an approved course.
  • Having annual household gross income below R600,000.
  • Having a Standard Bank transactional account.

Standard Bank also states that the product does not require the student to have an income to qualify.

CAN YOU GET A NEDBANK STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

Nedbank’s current student loan information provides an option for students who study part-time and have their own income.

Nedbank states that a student can apply without a guarantor if they are studying part-time, have an income and can make monthly repayments towards the student loan. Full-time students who cannot make the repayments themselves generally require a guarantor.

For part-time students, Nedbank requires repayment of the loan amount and interest from the beginning of the loan.

This makes the part-time route different from a no-surety loan designed specifically for full-time students.

DOES NSFAS OFFER STUDENT LOANS WITHOUT SURETY?

NSFAS provides loans to qualifying students through its student funding system, including the Missing Middle loan scheme. The current NSFAS eligibility information states that loan applicants include eligible South African citizens and permanent residents studying at public universities or TVET colleges, subject to the applicable requirements.

NSFAS loan funding is different from a commercial bank student loan. The current NSFAS Loan Agreement Form (LAF) applies to loan funding, and NSFAS publishes specific rules covering eligibility, repayment and the responsibilities of the student and surety.

For current NSFAS loan eligibility, non-SASSA undergraduate applicants generally fall within the gross household income range of more than R350,000 and up to R600,000 per year. Postgraduate loan applicants can have household income of up to R600,000, subject to the other applicable requirements.

NSFAS loan funding can cover registration and tuition fees, learning material and accommodation where applicable. It does not cover the standard living, personal care and transport allowances that may be available under the NSFAS bursary.

CAN YOU GET A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT YOUR PARENTS?

Not having your parents available to stand surety does not automatically prevent you from obtaining study finance.

The important distinction is whether the particular lender requires a guarantor. Some student loans require a parent, guardian, sponsor or another qualifying person to guarantee repayment, while other arrangements do not.

For example, Nedbank allows a part-time student with an income to apply without a guarantor, while its full-time student loan normally requires a guarantor when the student cannot make the repayments independently.

A student should therefore check the lender’s current requirements rather than assuming that a parent must always be involved.

CAN YOU GET A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT INCOME?

It depends on the loan product.

Some no-surety student loan products have specifically been designed for students who do not have their own income. Standard Bank’s published criteria for its Student Loan without Surety state that the student does not need an income to qualify. However, the bank’s current notice says applications for that backed offering are closed.

By contrast, a part-time student applying without a guarantor may need their own income because the student is expected to make monthly repayments. Nedbank explicitly states that a part-time applicant applying without a guarantor must have an income and be able to make the repayments.

Therefore, having no income and having no surety are two different requirements. A lender may remove the surety requirement but still require proof that the student can afford the loan repayments.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

Requirements vary by provider, but applicants may need to meet conditions relating to citizenship, study status, institution, course, income and academic progress.

For Standard Bank’s published no-surety criteria, the applicant must be a South African citizen, study full-time at a participating university, be enrolled for an approved course and have annual household gross income below R600,000. A Standard Bank transactional account is also required.

For a part-time student applying without a guarantor through Nedbank, the student must have an income and be able to make the required monthly payments.

Meeting the published requirements does not automatically guarantee approval. Lenders can apply additional credit, affordability and verification checks.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED?

The documents required depend on the provider, but a student loan application may require:

  • South African ID or other accepted identity document.
  • Proof of residential address.
  • Proof of registration or an acceptance letter.
  • Latest academic results.
  • Proof of tuition fees.
  • Proof of accommodation costs where accommodation funding is requested.
  • Invoices or proof of costs for textbooks and study equipment where applicable.
  • Proof of income where the applicant is required to demonstrate affordability.

For example, Standard Bank lists an ID, proof of residence, proof of household income, latest academic results, university registration letter and study-cost documents among the documents required for its no-surety application.

WHAT CAN A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY PAY FOR?

Study loans without surety are generally intended for approved education-related expenses rather than unrestricted personal spending.

Depending on the lender and loan product, funding can include:

  • Tuition fees.
  • Registration fees.
  • Accommodation.
  • Textbooks.
  • Required study equipment.
  • Other approved education-related costs.

Standard Bank’s no-surety product states that funding can be used for tuition, accommodation, books and educational necessities such as a laptop.

NSFAS loan funding can cover registration and tuition fees, learning material and accommodation where applicable, but does not provide the standard living, personal care and transport allowances associated with its bursary funding.

WHEN DO YOU REPAY A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

The repayment date depends on the lender and the type of loan.

Standard Bank’s published no-surety product states that students do not have to start repaying while completing their qualification. Under the published terms, repayment starts six months after completing studies or when employment is secured, whichever happens first. Interest and service fees are added to the outstanding balance from the start of the loan.

For a part-time applicant using a lender’s no-guarantor option, repayments can begin while the student is studying. Nedbank states that part-time students repay both the loan amount and interest from the start.

This is why students should compare the repayment structure before accepting a loan, rather than looking only at whether a surety is required.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDENT LOAN WITHOUT SURETY

The application process depends on the lender, but the usual steps are:

  1. Check whether you qualify without surety. Confirm the lender’s current requirements for your study status, course and institution.
  2. Check whether applications are open. Some no-surety products are limited to specific institutions or funding programmes.
  3. Prepare your documents. Have your ID, registration or acceptance documents, academic results and study-cost documents available.
  4. Complete the application. Apply through the lender’s approved online, branch or application process.
  5. Complete affordability and verification checks. The lender may verify your income, household circumstances, academic information and other details.
  6. Review the loan agreement. Check the interest rate, fees, repayment date, loan term and total amount payable before accepting the loan.

Students should use the lender’s current official application channel because the availability of no-surety products can change. For example, Standard Bank currently states that applications for its backed Student Loan without Surety offering are closed.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES IF YOU CANNOT GET A LOAN WITHOUT SURETY?

If you cannot obtain a student loan without surety, other forms of study funding may be available depending on your circumstances.

  • NSFAS funding: Eligible students at public universities and TVET colleges can apply for NSFAS bursary or loan funding, subject to the applicable criteria.
  • A student loan with a guarantor: Some commercial lenders require a parent, guardian, sponsor or another qualifying person to stand surety.
  • Bursaries: Companies, trusts, government departments and other organisations offer bursaries that may cover some or all approved study costs.
  • Scholarships: Scholarships can provide funding for undergraduate or postgraduate study, depending on the scholarship’s eligibility requirements.

A student who does not have a surety should not automatically assume that a personal loan is the only alternative. The appropriate funding route depends on the student’s institution, qualification, household income and ability to repay borrowed money.
