WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE BAKWENA BURSARY COVER?

The Bakwena Bursary is available for undergraduate studies in any field of study at a recognised South African university. The bursary is aimed at students who are entering their second year or higher, rather than first-year university students.

  • Engineering
  • Commerce and business
  • Health sciences
  • Science
  • Law
  • Education and teaching
  • Humanities
  • Other undergraduate fields offered by recognised South African universities

The bursary does not restrict applicants to a specific academic discipline. Applicants should therefore assess the other eligibility requirements, particularly the year of study, academic average, university registration and preferred residential location.

WHAT ARE THE BAKWENA BURSARY REQUIREMENTS?

To apply for the Bakwena Bursary for the 2027 academic year, applicants must meet the bursary’s stated eligibility requirements.

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be registered at a recognised South African university.
  • Be entering the second year of university or a higher year of study.
  • Have achieved a minimum overall university average of 60%.
  • Preferably reside within 6 kilometres of the Bakwena N1N4 route.
  • Complete the Bakwena bursary application form in full.
  • Submit the required supporting documentation.

The residential requirement is expressed as a preference rather than an absolute eligibility requirement. Bakwena’s N1N4 corridor includes communities along the routes managed by the company, including areas around Tshwane, Bela-Bela, Rustenburg, Zeerust and towards the Botswana border.

The bursary is intended for students from second year onwards. First-year university applicants are therefore not eligible for the current bursary programme.

WHAT DOES THE BAKWENA BURSARY COVER?

The Bakwena Bursary provides tuition funding of up to R35,000 for one year of study. The bursary amount is paid directly to the student’s university after the required account has been submitted.

  • Tuition fees: Up to R35,000.
  • Study period: One year of tuition.
  • Payment: Paid directly to the university.
  • Renewal: May be renewed subject to the availability of funds and satisfactory academic progress.

The current 2027 application information does not specify separate funding for accommodation, meals, books, transport, a laptop or a monthly living allowance. These benefits should therefore not be assumed to form part of the Bakwena Bursary.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE BAKWENA BURSARY?

Applications for the Bakwena Bursary are submitted directly to Bakwena by email.

  1. Download the current Bakwena Bursary application form.
  2. Complete all sections of the application form.
  3. Prepare the required supporting documents and certified copies.
  4. Include the completed application form and supporting documents in your submission.
  5. Email the application to info@bakwena.co.za.
  6. Use Bursary Application as the email subject heading.
  7. Submit the application before the closing date.

Bakwena has a limited number of bursaries and reserves the right to decline applications once its target number has been reached. Successful applicants are contacted after the final selection process has been completed.

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE BAKWENA BURSARY?

The current Bakwena application instructions require applicants to submit supporting documentation with the completed application form.

  • Certified copy of your South African ID.
  • Certified copy of your matric certificate.
  • Certified copies of your university academic results to date, including your first-year results.
  • Certified proof of residence.
  • Certified quotation for your 2027 university fees.
  • Motivation letter.
  • Details of two referees who are not family members, with at least one referee from your current university.

The application form also asks applicants to provide information about their university studies, expected completion date, existing contractual financial obligations, extracurricular activities, leadership positions and special achievements.

Make sure the documents requested by the current application form are included before submitting the application.

WHEN IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE BAKWENA BURSARY?

The Bakwena Bursary is currently OPEN for the 2027 academic year, with applications reported as closing on 30 November 2026.

There is an important date discrepancy in the current application material: the official 2027 Bakwena application form displays “31 November 2026”, which is not a valid calendar date. Current bursary listings consistently report 30 November 2026 as the closing date. Applicants should verify the closing date with Bakwena before submitting their application, particularly if applying close to the deadline.

Applications should be submitted as early as possible because Bakwena states that it has a limited number of bursaries and may decline applications once its target number has been reached.
