Allan Gray Orbis Foundation High School Scholarship 2028

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation High School Scholarship is a scholarship programme for young learners entering high school. It combines high-school funding with an entrepreneurial development programme designed to cultivate entrepreneurial thinking, leadership, problem-solving and a desire to create value.

WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP COVER?

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation High School Scholarship is not restricted to a particular field of study. It supports learners through high school while developing their entrepreneurial potential.

The programme focuses on entrepreneurial development rather than funding a specific university qualification or career field. Learners are exposed to entrepreneurship, leadership, problem-solving, collaboration and other skills intended to support their long-term development.

The scholarship should therefore be viewed as a high-school education and entrepreneurial development opportunity rather than a field-specific tertiary bursary.

WHAT DOES THE ALLAN GRAY ORBIS FOUNDATION HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP COVER?

The scholarship provides financial support for high-school education at leading partner schools. The Foundation’s programme information states that the scholarship covers:

  • Tuition and boarding
  • Monthly allowance
  • Toiletries
  • School uniforms and casual clothing
  • Support for extra-mural activities
  • Stationery and textbooks

Scholarship recipients also receive entrepreneurial development support, including workshops, an annual entrepreneurial conference, online learning, mentorship from a Programme Officer and access to a community of other scholars.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP?

The scholarship is intended for learners who are currently in Grade 6 and demonstrate academic potential, financial need and an interest in entrepreneurship.

Applicants must meet the Foundation’s requirements, including:

  • Be a current Grade 6 learner in the year of application.
  • Be a South African citizen, with at least one parent being a South African citizen.
  • Be between 11 and 12 years old while in Grade 6.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Have a minimum of 70% in Mathematics and English for Grades 5 and 6.
  • Show an interest in becoming an entrepreneur or business owner.
  • Have an active cellphone number for application-status notifications.

The current application requirements also state that household gross income must not exceed R20,000 per month, including business revenue.

The scholarship is intended for learners progressing into Grade 8 at a leading high school. It is therefore a high-school opportunity rather than a university or postgraduate scholarship.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP?

Applications are submitted to the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation during its annual application period.

The Foundation provides an online application option as well as a downloadable application form. Applicants should use the current application instructions provided by the Foundation because submission requirements can change between application cycles.

The selection process includes an application assessment, a Foundation assessment in Mathematics and English, interviews and, for recommended candidates, interviews with potential placement schools.

The Foundation then makes the final scholarship award after the placement-school process has been completed.

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP?

Applicants must submit supporting documentation with their application. The current Foundation checklist includes:

  • Certified copy of the learner’s unabridged birth certificate.
  • Certified copies of the parents’ or legal guardians’ identity documents.
  • Certified copy of the learner’s Grade 5 Term 4 school report.
  • Certified copy of the learner’s Grade 6 Term 2 school report.
  • Proof of household income.

The proof of income required depends on the household’s circumstances. The application documentation provides different requirements for employed, self-employed and unemployed parents or guardians.

Additional documents may also be required where relevant, such as a death certificate, divorce decree or proof of legal guardianship.

Applicants should submit all required documents because incomplete applications may be disqualified.

WHEN IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP?

The Foundation’s current application cycle is for high-school placement in 2028.

Applications for this cycle opened in June 2026.

The closing date is 15 September 2026.

The current application form states that applications delivered after 15 September 2026 will not be considered. The Foundation’s selection process then includes an assessment in December 2026 and interviews in February and March 2027.

The next application date has not been announced. Parents and guardians should check the Foundation’s latest scholarship announcement when the next application cycle opens.
