South Africa’s water sector faces challenges like infrastructure maintenance, sustainable resource management, and climate resilience. Vaal Central Water (VCW) is responsible for bulk water supply to municipalities in the Free State and Northern Cape. The Vaal Central Water Bursary is aiming to address the skills shortages by offering financial support to 20 students. Successful applicants will be assisted to complete relevant studies to qualify as water engineers, environmental specialists, and technical professionals.

What Does The VCW Bursary Cover?
The VCW Bursary provides comprehensive financial support for the 2026 academic year and is renewable annually subject to satisfactory academic performance. Coverage includes:
- Full tuition fees
- Prescribed textbooks and study materials
- Accommodation or residence fees
- Monthly living allowance
Successful recipients may be required to undertake vacation work, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), or job shadowing at VCW. Upon graduation, bursars commit to a two-year work-back obligation with the organisation, offering a direct pathway into employment in the water sector.
Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?
You must meet the following criteria for your application to be considered:
- Be South African citizens
- Be between 18 and 25 years old
- Be in Grade 12 or have completed Matric (NSC or equivalent)
- Achieve a minimum of 60% in Mathematics, Physical Science, and related subjects
- Intend to study full-time at a recognised South African tertiary institution in 2026
- Demonstrate genuine interest in the water and environmental sector
- Preferably come from historically disadvantaged backgrounds
Minimum Admission Point Score (APS) requirements vary by field:
- Engineering programmes: APS 32–36
- Hydrology / Cyber Security: APS 30–34
- Environmental Science: APS 28–32
- Water Management / Water Treatment: APS 26–30
Preference is given to:
- Female applicants
- Students living with disabilities
- Candidates from fence-line communities in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces
Applicants must not be receiving funding from any other bursary or NSFAS.
