What Is the Standard Bank Bursary?
Standard Bank is one of South Africa’s major banks and has been around since 1862. Since it was started, it has expanded its footprint to many countries in Africa. The bursary programme helps undergraduate students in their second year of studies upwards. It targets students who have good marks but come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. This bursary provides full-cost financial support covering tuition, accommodation, a laptop, mentoring, and other study-related expenses

The bursary is renewed annually subject to satisfactory academic performance.
Eligibility Criteria- Who Can Apply?
Here is the list of requirements for the Standard Bank Bursary programme:
- Applicants must be South African citizens
- Applicants must be enrolled for the full-time study at a public university in South Africa
- Currently in 2nd year or above of undergraduate study, or enrolled for postgraduate study
- A minimum academic average of 65% in the most recent examinations
- Applicants must be from previously disadvantaged backgrounds
Standard Bank prioritises students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate academic potential and leadership qualities. Postgraduate applicants studying towards an Honours degree, Postgraduate Diploma, or Master’s qualification must also maintain a minimum 65% average.
Additional Requirements
Standard Bank requires a set of competencies and skills from students who apply for funding for 2027 academic year. These are:
- academic excellence,
- financial need, and
- leadership potential.

Please note: Applicants are required to participate in a formal assessment process which may include psychometric testing.
Supporting Documents Required
When you apply, you’ll need certified copies (stamped at a police station) of:
- Your South African ID
- Grade 12 certificate
- Your academic records from school
- Proof your family needs financial help (like pay slips or affidavit)
All certified copies must have been certified within the last six months.

Applications for 2027 academic year open on 1 June and close on 30 September 2026.
