The 2027 application period runs from 1 August to 30 September 2026.
WHAT IS THE ROYAL BAFOKENG INSTITUTE STUDENT LOAN?
The Royal Bafokeng Institute (RBI) Student Loan is a tertiary education funding programme for qualifying members of the Royal Bafokeng Nation. It supports eligible students pursuing undergraduate studies at accredited public universities in North West and Gauteng Provinces.
Unlike a bursary or scholarship, this programme is a student loan. Students should therefore understand the loan and repayment obligations before accepting funding.
WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE ROYAL BAFOKENG INSTITUTE STUDENT LOAN COVER?
The programme supports selected undergraduate qualifications in the following fields:
- Health Sciences — BSc in Medical Science and Acupuncture are excluded.
- BCom — Accountancy and Auditing only.
- Bachelor of Education — Foundation Phase and Senior/FET Phase qualifications offered by North-West University through the Akanyang Centre for Teaching in Phokeng.
- Social Work — supported under the BA route.
- Fine Arts — supported only when studied at a University of Technology.
- Engineering
- LLB (Bachelor of Laws)
For B.Ed Senior/FET Phase, Mathematics is compulsory together with an approved subject combination including Physical Science, Accountancy, Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design, English or Setswana.

WHAT ARE THE ROYAL BAFOKENG INSTITUTE STUDENT LOAN REQUIREMENTS?
To apply for the student loan, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be a bona fide member of the Royal Bafokeng Nation.
- Demonstrate financial need based on household income.
- Have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 30, excluding Life Orientation.
- Apply for NSFAS funding.
- Be accepted into an accredited public university in North West or Gauteng Provinces.
- Intend to study towards a supported undergraduate qualification.
WHAT DOES THE ROYAL BAFOKENG INSTITUTE STUDENT LOAN COVER?
The current application information does not state a fixed monthly allowance or a single standard loan amount. The amount and terms applicable to an individual applicant should therefore be confirmed with RBI before accepting the loan.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE ROYAL BAFOKENG INSTITUTE STUDENT LOAN?
Applications are completed by downloading the Royal Bafokeng Institute (RBI) Student Loan Application Form 2027. Alternatively, the form can be collected from RBI campus in Phokeng.

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE ROYAL BAFOKENG INSTITUTE STUDENT LOAN?
The current RBI application information requires applicants to prepare the following documents:
- Certified copy of your South African ID, not older than three months.
- Latest Grade 11 or Grade 12 results.
- Certified final Grade 12 results, where applicable.
- Proof of NSFAS application.
- Academic transcript if you are already studying at university.
- Recommendation letter from your Kgosana.
- Parent’s payslip or an affidavit if the parent is unemployed.
- University acceptance letter when the loan is being finalised.
WHEN IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE RBI STUDENT LOAN?
The application period for the 2027 academic year runs from 1 August to 30 September 2026. The closing date is therefore 30 September 2026.
Applications submitted after the closing date will not be considered for the current intake.
Future application dates may change from one intake to the next. The 2027 dates should not be treated as the permanent annual closing date for the programme.
