The Tharisa Bursary helps South African students with financial support to help them pay for university studies in fields related to mining. Tharisa is a mining company that produces platinum and chrome, running its operations in the North West province. The bursary is awarded on annual basis with the aim of suporting young students who are passionate about working in the mining sector one day. Studies must be aligned with mining and engineering.
Fields of Study Covered by the Tharisa Bursary
Applications for the 2026 academic year are invited from full-time undergraduate students in the following fields of study:
- Mining Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Metallurgy / Chemical Engineering
- Geology
- Analytical Chemistry
- Civil Engineering (limited cases)
Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?
If you wish to have your financial support request considered by Tharisa, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen
- Have Matric with minimum 60% in Mathematics and Physical Science
- Be accepted or registered for full-time studies in 2026
- Come from the North West province or nearby communities (preferred)
Expenses Covered by the Tharisa Bursary
If your application meet the criteria and you are successful, you will have the following expenses taken care of:
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation
- Books and study materials
- Monthly living allowance
Some recipients also get vacation work experience at the Tharisa mine during holidays.
