The Amazon Recruitment Bursary is a South African university funding programme for students pursuing technology-related undergraduate degrees and preparing for careers as Software Development Engineers. The programme is administered by StudyTrust on behalf of Amazon Development Centre.
Unlike a general university bursary, this opportunity combines financial support with a paid Amazon summer internship. Successful interns are assessed for the possibility of receiving a full-time Software Development Engineer position after completing their studies.
IS THE AMAZON BURSARY OPEN FOR 2027?
🟢 AMAZON BURSARY 2027 STATUS: OPEN
Opening date: 1 June 2026
Closing date: 30 September 2026
Academic year: 2027
Application platform: StudyTrust
Study stage: Final undergraduate year in 2027
Last verified: 9 September 2026
Yes. Applications for the 2027 intake are currently open. StudyTrust states that applications run from 1 June to 30 September 2026 and that applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, so students are encouraged to apply before the closing date rather than waiting until the final day.
The programme is specifically aimed at students entering the final year of an undergraduate degree in 2027 and planning to continue to Honours or another NQF Level 8 qualification in 2028.
WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY COVER?
The current programme is focused on undergraduate qualifications related to software development and Software Development Engineering.
- Computer Science
- Computer Engineering
- Software Engineering
- Artificial Intelligence
- Machine Learning
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are eligible where they are offered as specialisations within the relevant technology-related study pathway.
Students should not assume that every Information Technology, Information Systems or other computing-related qualification qualifies. Previous versions of the programme have listed broader technology fields, but the current StudyTrust criteria specifically identify Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering, including Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence specialisations.
If the exact title of your qualification is not clearly covered by the current criteria, confirm your eligibility with StudyTrust before submitting your application.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AMAZON BURSARY?
To be considered for the 2027 intake, applicants must meet the programme’s academic, study-level, citizenship and career requirements.
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be enrolled at a recognised South African university.
- Be studying towards an eligible undergraduate qualification in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering, including eligible Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning specialisations.
- Be entering the final undergraduate year in 2027 — the third year of a three-year degree or fourth year of a four-year degree.
- Intend to continue to an Honours degree or NQF Level 8 qualification in 2028.
- Plan to complete tertiary education at Honours/NQF Level 8 by the end of 2028.
- Have an academic average of at least 65%.
- Demonstrate coding ability in a programming language such as Java, C, C++, C# or Python.
- Have a genuine interest in software development engineering.
- Be available for the required paid Amazon summer internship.
- Be available to commence full-time employment with Amazon in January 2029 if a permanent position is offered after the internship assessment.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT
The minimum academic requirement is an average of 65% or above. The programme is aimed at students who are already at university and are entering their final undergraduate year in 2027.
CODING REQUIREMENT
Academic marks alone are not enough. Applicants must demonstrate coding ability and technical problem-solving skills using a programming language of their choice. StudyTrust gives Java, C, C#, C++ and Python as examples.
Applicants should use the application to show practical evidence of their technical ability. This could include university programming projects, software they have developed, coding experience or other examples that demonstrate their problem-solving skills.
CITIZENSHIP AND UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENT
The programme is open to South African citizens studying at recognised South African universities. It is not presented as a general funding opportunity for students studying at international universities or non-university institutions.
IS THE AMAZON BURSARY FOR UNDERGRADUATE OR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS?
The programme is primarily aimed at students who are entering their final undergraduate year in 2027 and intend to continue to Honours or another NQF Level 8 qualification in 2028.
This means that a student beginning first year in 2027 would not qualify for this particular opportunity.
The programme does provide for progression to Honours/NQF Level 8 in 2028, but it is not a general postgraduate bursary. Master’s-level students are not eligible.
WHAT DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY COVER?
The programme covers several university and study-related expenses. StudyTrust states that these costs are subject to applicable funding caps.
- Tuition fees
- Residence or private accommodation
- Subsistence
- Stationery and books
- A personal computer
- Transport
StudyTrust does not publish one fixed rand value that applies to every recipient. Instead, the listed expenses are covered subject to the relevant caps.
DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY COVER ACCOMMODATION?
Yes. Residence or private accommodation is listed among the covered expenses, subject to the applicable funding cap.
DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY PROVIDE A LAPTOP?
Yes. A personal computer is included among the costs covered by the programme, subject to the applicable funding cap.
DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY PROVIDE A MONTHLY ALLOWANCE?
The funding includes subsistence, but StudyTrust does not currently publish a single fixed monthly rand amount. Students should therefore be cautious of older websites quoting a specific monthly allowance as though it were the confirmed 2027 amount.
HOW MUCH DOES THE AMAZON BURSARY PAY?
There is no single published rand amount for the programme. Instead, StudyTrust lists specific study-related expenses that are funded subject to caps. The total value will therefore depend on the applicable costs and funding limits.
IS THERE A WORK-BACK OR EMPLOYMENT OBLIGATION?
There is an important employment condition that applicants should understand before accepting the funding.
StudyTrust states that candidates awarded funding must be open to accepting a full-time permanent position with Amazon for a duration equal to the years of bursary funding, provided Amazon makes a job offer after the internship assessment. StudyTrust states that this condition applies to candidates who wish to qualify for 100% of the bursary funding.
This should not be interpreted as a guarantee of employment. Amazon assesses interns during the programme and may make a permanent Software Development Engineer offer based on the outcome of that assessment.
For the current intake, applicants must be available to start full-time permanent employment in January 2029 if they receive an offer.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE AMAZON BURSARY?
Apply online via the Amazon Bursary Application 2027 official page.
The application is completed through StudyTrust’s online bursary application platform. Use the current programme page and application route rather than an old third-party link.
WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE AMAZON BURSARY?
The current programme page does not provide a separate public checklist of every supporting document required for the 2027 intake.
Applicants should therefore follow the document requirements displayed in the live StudyTrust application platform and upload every document requested before submitting.
Students should have their academic and personal information readily available when completing the application. However, Grads24 does not recommend presenting an old third-party document list as the confirmed 2027 checklist when the current application may request different supporting documents.
WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE AMAZON BURSARY?
Meeting the minimum requirements does not automatically mean that an applicant will receive funding. The programme includes an additional Amazon assessment for shortlisted candidates.
- Applicants submit their applications through StudyTrust.
- Applications are reviewed against the programme’s eligibility requirements.
- Suitable applicants may be shortlisted.
- Shortlisted candidates undergo an additional assessment with Amazon.
- The assessment includes demonstrating coding and problem-solving ability.
- Successful bursary recipients complete a paid Amazon internship during the summer vacation.
- Amazon assesses internship performance for a possible full-time Software Development Engineer position after completion of the student’s studies.
This means that the opportunity is not based solely on academic performance. Coding ability, technical problem-solving and genuine interest in software development are important parts of the selection process.
WHEN IS THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE AMAZON BURSARY?
The closing date for the 2027 intake is 30 September 2026.
Applications opened on 1 June 2026. StudyTrust says that applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis throughout the application period and encourages students to submit early.
Submit your application early and make sure all information and documents requested by the StudyTrust application platform have been completed before submission.
