WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AMAZON BURSARY?

To be considered for the 2027 intake, applicants must meet the programme’s academic, study-level, citizenship and career requirements.

• Be a South African citizen.
• Be enrolled at a recognised South African university.
• Be studying towards an eligible undergraduate qualification in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering, including eligible Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning specialisations.
• Be entering the final undergraduate year in 2027 — the third year of a three-year degree or fourth year of a four-year degree.
• Intend to continue to an Honours degree or NQF Level 8 qualification in 2028.
• Plan to complete tertiary education at Honours/NQF Level 8 by the end of 2028.
• Have an academic average of at least 65%.
• Demonstrate coding ability in a programming language such as Java, C, C++, C# or Python.
• Have a genuine interest in software development engineering.
• Be available for the required paid Amazon summer internship.
• Be available to commence full-time employment with Amazon in January 2029 if a permanent position is offered after the internship assessment.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

The minimum academic requirement is an average of 65% or above. The programme is aimed at students who are already at university and are entering their final undergraduate year in 2027.

CODING REQUIREMENT

Academic marks alone are not enough. Applicants must demonstrate coding ability and technical problem-solving skills using a programming language of their choice. StudyTrust gives Java, C, C#, C++ and Python as examples.

Applicants should use the application to show practical evidence of their technical ability. This could include university programming projects, software they have developed, coding experience or other examples that demonstrate their problem-solving skills.

CITIZENSHIP AND UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENT

The programme is open to South African citizens studying at recognised South African universities. It is not presented as a general funding opportunity for students studying at international universities or non-university institutions.

IS THE AMAZON BURSARY FOR UNDERGRADUATE OR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS?

The programme is primarily aimed at students who are entering their final undergraduate year in 2027 and intend to continue to Honours or another NQF Level 8 qualification in 2028.

This means that a student beginning first year in 2027 would not qualify for this particular opportunity.

The programme does provide for progression to Honours/NQF Level 8 in 2028, but it is not a general postgraduate bursary. Master’s-level students are not eligible.
