Are you a storyteller with a passion for film, TV or animation? The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Bursary Programme 2027 is a non-repayable grant for future filmmakers, directors, scriptwriters, editors and digital visionaries at accredited South African institutions.
NFVF Bursary 2027 Closing Date
The closing date for the NFVF Bursary Programme 2027 is 31 August 2026 at 17:00. Submissions open 03 June 2026. Late, emailed or faxed applications will not be considered.
What Does the NFVF Bursary Cover?
- Full tuition fees – 100% – paid directly to institution
- Accommodation and meals – capped at R50,000 per annum combined – for first-year students only, subject to availability of funds – basic contribution per semester
- Other resources – textbooks, computer, software – within R50k cap, based on course requirements – proforma invoices on letterhead required
- NOT covered: Travel expenses, outstanding (owed) tertiary fees
Fields of Study Covered by the NFVF Bursary
This funding is open to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate National Diploma / Degree studies in Film or Television-related fields at accredited South African tertiary institutions.
- Film / Television Production, Directing, Screenwriting, Cinematography
- Film Editing, Sound Production, Animation, Visual Effects, Documentary, Post-Production, Film Business and Distribution
- Other recognised Film & TV disciplines – preference to public institutions
Courses NOT Covered
- Performing arts, acting, music, dancing, theatre performance, and any course not within Film/TV category
Who Can Apply for NFVF Bursary?
- South African citizen, completed and passed Matric
- Registered or provisionally registered for full-time undergraduate / postgraduate diploma / degree in Film/TV at recognised SA institution
- Good academic record – current tertiary students need 60% aggregate + pass rate to next year – matriculants assessed on Grade 11 final or Matric June results
- Demonstrate financial need – combined gross income less than R600,000 per year for parents/guardians if minor (under 21)
- Must declare in writing if you have other funders – name and amount
Selection Criteria
- Financial need – less than R600k combined income
- Academic performance – 60%+ for current students, Grade 11 / June for matrics
- Motivation letter – why Film/TV, career goals, impact in SA industry
- Demographics – gender, race, disability, province – per NFVF transformation objectives – preference to previously disadvantaged individuals
Required Documents
- Completed online application form on praxis portal
- Letter of acceptance or acknowledgment of application from institution
- One-page motivation letter
- Certified ID copy – dated within 6 months
- Certified Matric certificate or latest academic results – dated within 6 months
- Annual academic fees breakdown on institution letterhead
- Commitment letter for bursary / loan from other sponsors where applicable
- If under 21: Parents/guardian proof of income – payslips, bank statement with bank stamp or IRP, proof of social grant if unemployed, affidavit for absent parent whereabouts, death certificate if applicable
- If over 21: Your proof of financial need – payslip, bank statement with stamp, IRP, affidavit if unemployed
