The Council for Geoscience (CGS) Bursary is inviting full-time South African students to apply for funding for selected fields of study. This bursary initiative is aimed at providing financial support and develop talent in geosciences and related engineering fields. Students who complete their studies with this bursary programme can contributing to South Africa’s future pool of skilled professionals.
Field of Study Covered by the CGS Bursary
The CGS invites applications from students who are in financial distress and need money to cover expenses for 2026 academic year.
Applications are invited from students pursuing one of the following fields of study:
- Geology
- Engineering Geology
- Geophysics
- Hydrogeology
- Geochemistry
- Economic Geology
- Environmental Science
- Geo-informatics
- Remote sensing
- Computational Geosciences
- Mineral Economics
- Mining seismology
Eligibility Requirements
In order for your application to be considered by the CGS for 2026 academic year, you must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be South African citizen.
- Be Unemployed or engaged in vocational work during study period, with a willingness to work back upon completing their degree.
- Be a full-time student at a recognized South African institution of higher learning for the 2026 academic year.
- Current students at a higher learning institution must have passed all modules from the previous academic year or semester.
CGS Bursary Value and Benefits
The bursary will caters for expenses incurred during the period of studies funded by CGS. This allows students to focus on studies and not worry about fees. It covers:
- Registration and tuition fees
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Prescribed Books
- Excursions/research
- Once off laptop allowance for first-time bursars
