The Valterra Platinum Bursary South African students, particularly those from host communities near the company’s mining operations, the opportunity to secure funding for their studies. Valterra Platinum is one of South Africa’s leading platinum producers formerly known as Anglo American Platinum. It invests in skills development and community upliftment through initiatives including this bursary programme.

Fields of Study Supported by Valterra Platinum Bursary

The Valterra Platinum Bursary Programme is administered through the Tshikululu Trust. It targets students in ALL fields of study who reside is these locations:

  • Amandelbult Mine (Limpopo province)
  • Mogalakwena Mine (Limpopo province)
  • Mototolo Mine (Limpopo province)
  • Polokwane Smelter (Limpopo province)
  • Rustenburg Processing and Smelting Operations: Mortimer Smelter, Convertor Plant (CP), Base Metal Refinery (BMR), Precious Metal Refinery (PMR), Waterval Smelter (North West)
  • Twickenham Project (Limpopo province)

Valterra Platinum Bursary Coverage

Successful applicants will receive coverage for the following expenses: tuition, residence and relevant allowance. It will be extended for the course duration but must be renewed each year.

The bursary value may vary depending on specific needs of the each recipient but the approval and discretion is as according to Trustees.

Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?

In order for your application to qualify for the Valterra Platinum Community Bursary for 2026, you must meet these requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Reside (or have completed the majority of schooling) in host communities around Valterra Platinum operations, including:
    • Amandelbult Mine, Mogalakwena Mine, Mototolo Mine, Polokwane Smelter, and Twickenham Project (all in Limpopo).
    • Rustenburg Processing and Smelting Operations, including Mortimer Smelter, Waterval Smelter, and refineries (in North West).
  • Have completed Matric in 2024 or 2025.
  • Be aged 18–25 years.
  • Be enrolled or accepted for a first undergraduate programme (full-time, 3-year duration, completing by December 2028 at latest) at a SAQA-accredited public or private higher education institution.
  • Not be a child of a Valterra Platinum employee.
  • Preference is given to vulnerable groups, such as orphans, vulnerable children, those from unemployed or child-headed households.

  • ID document. Matric certificate
  • Latest academic record (on institution letterhead if currently studying)
  • Acceptance or conditional acceptance letter from the institution
  • Proof of registration (if available)
  • Proof of residence (recent, stamped letter from traditional council or municipality)
  • Proof of vulnerability status (e.g., SASSA grant recipient proof or affidavit for orphaned/unemployed/child-headed households).
