Located near Hotazel in the Northern Cape, Black Rock Mine forms part of Assmang Proprietary Limited is a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) and Assore. The operation is known for its world-class safety standards, cutting-edge technology, and significant contribution to the global manganese market. Assmang invests in youth with the aim of building the next generation of skilled professionals in sustainable mining in South Africa.

What Does the Assmang Manganese Bursary Cover?

Successful applicants will receive comprehensive financial support that includes:

  • Full tuition fees
  • On-campus or approved private accommodation
  • A brand-new laptop
  • All prescribed textbooks and study materials

This is one of the most generous mining-sector bursaries available, designed to remove every financial barrier so recipients can focus entirely on their studies.

Fields of Study

Assmang is awarding a small, targeted number of bursaries in the following critical disciplines:

  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) – 1 award
  • Industrial Engineering – 1 award
  • Information Technology – 1 award
  • Geology – 1 award
  • Mechanical Engineering – 1 award
  • Metallurgical Engineering (BSc / BTech Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering) – 2 awards
  • Mine Survey – 2 awards
  • Mining Engineering – 2 awards
  • Occupational Hygiene (BTech / Advanced Diploma / Degree in Environmental Health) – 2 awards

Only 13 bursaries will be awarded nationally – making this an extremely selective opportunity.

Eligibility Criteria – Who Should Apply?

To be considered, you must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • South African citizen
  • Aged 18–35 years
  • Completed Matric with a Bachelor’s pass (university exemption) OR currently in Matric and on track for a Bachelor’s pass
  • Intending to register or already provisionally accepted for full-time studies in 2026 at an accredited South African university or university of technology
  • Strong academic results – minimum B-symbol (70–79%) overall average
  • Not in receipt of any other bursary or funding
  • Special preference will be given to:
    • Applicants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds
    • Students residing in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality (Northern Cape)
    • Persons living with disabilities
    • Candidates who already have university acceptance letters for 2026
