A bursary is a type of financial assistance that companies and organisations extend to students who are unable to pay for their tertiary edication. They mus also be able to prove that they are from previously disadvantaged backround.

A bursary is different from scholarship in that recipients of a scholarship do not have to come from poor or previously disadvantaged background. They just have to have good marks and that’s all.

Public institutions of higher learning are those that are under the Department of Higher Education. Rarely you will come across a bursary that funds studies pursued in a private institution. They are very few in South Africa.

BURSARIES FOR 2024 UNDERGRADUATE – DO YOU HAVE TO PAY BACK THE BURSARY MONEY?

Since companies grants bursaries to successful applicants with the aim of supporting them to complete their qualifications, most of them do not require you to pay the money back. When you are awarded a bursary you sign an agreement which states all conditions and obligations.

If you breach your bursary agreement and you do not complete your studies, you will be expected to pay the money back. This clause must be included in all bursary agreements and if it does not appear, you must inquire from your bursar.
