WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INVESTEC BURSARY?

The Investec tertiary bursary is aimed at young South African students with academic potential and financial need. The current StudyTrust criteria state that applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must currently be in Grade 12, taking a gap year after Grade 12, or be in your first year of university.
  • You must intend to study full-time towards an eligible undergraduate degree.
  • Your qualification must be one of the fields supported by the programme.

  • You must demonstrate financial need.
  • You must meet the applicable academic requirements.

StudyTrust states that the bursary is not available for private tertiary institutions. Applicants should also apply for university admission separately and check the admission requirements and deadlines of their chosen institution.

WHAT MARKS DO I NEED FOR THE INVESTEC BURSARY?

The academic requirements depend on whether you are applying from Grade 12 or are already in your first year of university.

GRADE 12 AND MATRIC APPLICANTS

  • At least 70% in Mathematics.
  • Mathematics must be Pure Mathematics; Maths Literacy is not accepted.
  • At least 70% in English First Additional Language or 65% in English Home Language.
  • At least 60% in all other subjects.
  • You must hold or be working towards a Matric exemption.

FIRST-YEAR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

  • You must be in your first year of university.
  • You must have achieved an average of more than 60% in your first-semester examination.
  • If you are studying a STEM degree, you must have achieved at least 60% in each subject in the first-semester examination.

Meeting the minimum marks does not guarantee that an applicant will receive funding. Investec and StudyTrust consider both academic potential and financial need when selecting bursary recipients.

DOES THE INVESTEC BURSARY HAVE AN INCOME LIMIT?

The current Investec tertiary bursary information does not state a single household-income ceiling. Instead, financial need is one of the main selection criteria.

Applicants must provide information and supporting documentation relating to their household financial circumstances. Depending on the family’s circumstances, this can include payslips, employer letters, financial statements, affidavits and other supporting documents.

WHAT DOES THE INVESTEC BURSARY COVER?

Investec describes the award as a full bursary per year towards study-related expenses. The exact allocation is subject to the programme’s terms and conditions.

Investec does not publish one universal rand amount that applies to every recipient. It is therefore more accurate to describe the award as a full bursary towards study-related expenses rather than claiming a fixed annual cash amount.

The programme also provides support beyond the financial award. Investec states that bursary recipients are paired with Investec staff members who volunteer as mentors throughout their academic careers.

WORK-READINESS SUPPORT

Investec also runs a Work Readiness Programme for Investec CSI partner programmes and CSI bursary beneficiaries who are in their third or final year of study. The programme is designed to help students develop skills needed when entering the workplace and searching for employment.

DOES THE INVESTEC BURSARY HAVE AN EMPLOYMENT OBLIGATION?

The current Investec tertiary bursary information does not state a general compulsory employment or work-back obligation for bursary recipients.

Instead, Investec emphasises mentorship, work readiness and helping bursary recipients become employable and transition successfully from university into the workplace. Applicants should nevertheless read the terms and conditions applicable to their bursary award carefully.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE INVESTEC BURSARY?

The Investec tertiary bursary application is managed through StudyTrust. Applicants must complete the online StudyTrust application and submit all required supporting documents before the closing date.

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE INVESTEC BURSARY?

The main selection criteria are academic potential and financial need. Applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements, but satisfying those requirements does not guarantee that a bursary will be awarded.

Investec states that it receives thousands of applications each year. Approximately 50 to 55 applicants are shortlisted, with up to 30 students selected for the bursary.

This makes the programme highly competitive. Applicants should therefore provide accurate academic and financial information and ensure that their application is complete.
