The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is offering a full-time bursary program for university students in the 2025 academic year. This funding initiative is aimed at providing financial support and develop talent in geosciences and related engineering fields. Students who complete their studies with this bursary programme can contributing to South Africa’s future pool of skilled professionals.
CGS BURSARY 2025: FIELDS OF STUDY
The CGS invites applications from students who are in financial distress and need money to cover expenses for 2025 academic year.
Applications are invited from students pursuing one of the following fields of study:
- Geology
- Engineering Geology
- Geophysics
- Hydrogeology
- Geochemistry
- Economic Geology
- Environmental Science
- Geo-informatics
- Remote sensing
- Computational Geosciences
- Mineral Economics
- Mining seismology

WHAT IS COVERED BY THE BURSARY
The bursary will caters for expenses incurred during the period of studies funded by CGS. This allows students to focus on studies and not worry about fees. It covers:
- Registration and tuition fees
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Prescribed Books
- Excursions/research
- Once off laptop allowance for first-time bursars
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BURSARY
In order for your application to be considered by the CGS in 2025, you must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be South African citizen.
- Be Unemployed or engaged in vocational work during study period, with a willingness to work back upon completing their degree.
- Be a full-time student at a recognized South African institution of higher learning for the 2025 academic year.
- Current students at a higher learning institution must have passed all modules from the previous academic year or semester.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE CGS BURSARY
1. Download The Bursary Application Form
The first step is to download the Council for Geoscience Bursary Application Form for 2025/2026 academic year. It comes as a PDF format and all fieds must be completed.
2. Prepare All Supporting Documents
The application form must be accompanied by supporting documents. These are needed to assess your application and failure to provide them will disqualify you. They are:
- Certified copy of your identity document (ID).
- Certified copy of their matric certificate/results.
- Certified copy of latest academic record.
- Motivation letter (see our guide on how to write a bursary motivational letter).
- Recently updated CV.
- Acceptance letter from the university.
3. Complete the Application Form
Fill in the form by providing all required information and then attach all required documents.
4. Submit the Application
Once you have completed the form and attached your documents, email it to bursaries@geoscience.org.za. The email heading must read ‘BursaryFT-2025’.
CLOSING DATE
The deadline for applications is 21 March 2025 – Application received after this date will not be considered.
